Also called anamon 穴門. Lit. cave gate. An arched side gate *kugurimon 潜り門. It is hewn from a white-surfaced, hard packed earthen wall that connects the *sanrō 山廊, a single-storied small structure with a gable roof *kirizuma yane 切妻屋根, to the tall gate *rōmon 楼門, usually called *sanmon 三門, at Zen temples. A small kutsumon serves as an exit or entrance for everyday use. This type of gate is used also at temples of Ōbaku 黄檗 sect and is characterized by its lively decoration. Example: Manpukuji Kutsumon 萬福寺窟門 (1768) in Kyoto.
