Lit. shoe-removing stone. A flat-topped stone used for taking off one's shoes before entering a *shoin 書院 style tearoom. It is placed below the section of the veranda from where one enters or exits the structure. In rustic tearooms *sōan 草庵, this stone is called the *fumi-ishi 踏石, ichiban-ishi 一番石, or *hatsu-no-ishi 初の石. Kutsunugi may also be written 沓解, 沓抜, or 履脱.
