Natural scenery of a particular place; environment. Whenever possible, temples of the Zen 禅 sect during the medieval period were built on sites that would provide scenery of natural beauty without any need to create such an environment artificially. Example: Eihōji 永保寺 (1313) in Gifu Prefecture, situated in a hilly region, has two buildings, the Kannondō 観音堂 (1314) and the Kaisandō 開山堂 (1352), that face a pond over which a curved wooden bridge is constructed with an arbor for scenery viewing.
