1 The standard measurement used for bay size in the Kansai 関西 region, along the Inland Sea, along the San'in 山陰 area, and part of Kyūshū 九州. A bay was considered to be the space between two pillars (not from pillar center to pillar center as in some other parts of Japan). The kyōma size, established in the late 16th century, was 6.5 shaku 尺 (196.95 cm). The size of floor mats *tatami 畳 also varied in different parts of Japan. The so-called Kyoto size tatami is 6.3 shaku 尺 (190.89 cm) X 3.15 shaku (95.445 cm), which is larger than that in the Kantō 関東 region. Also called honkyōma 本京間, honma 本間, or ōma 大間. A bay is of 6.3 shaku is sometimes called chūkyōma 中京間.
2 An abbreviation for tōkyōma 東京間, a bay size measurement of 6 shaku (181.8 cm).
