Ch: Jiulao. Lit. nine old friends. An abbreviation of Kyūrōkai-zu 九老会図 (Ch: Jiulaohuitu). Paintings zu 図, of the elegant gathering kai 会, of the Tang poet Bai Letian (Jp: *Haku Rakuten 白楽天) and eight close friends in 845 at Luoyang (Jp: Rakuyō 洛陽). The eight are Hu Gao (Jp: Ko Kō 胡杲), Ji Min (Jp: Kitsu Min 吉みん), Zheng Ju (Jp: Tei Kyo 鄭拠), Liu Zhen (Jp: Ryū Shin 劉真), Lu Zhen (Jp: Ro Shin 盧真), Qiu Jianmu (Jp: Teki Kenbo 狄兼謨), Lu Zhen (Jp: Ro Tei 盧貞 ), and Zhang Hun (Jp: Chō Kon 張渾). Japanese paintings of the subject by Maruyama Ōkyo 円山応挙 (1733-95) and Watanabe Kazan 渡辺華山 (1793-1841) typically depict the nine in the loose robes of confucian gentlemen.
