A low folding screen about 50 cm high, and usually with two panels, *nikyoku byōbu 二曲屏風, although sometimes with four panels, *yonkyoku byōbu 四曲屏風. So called because it was placed near the pillow, makura 枕, when bedding was laid out. The screen served as a rack for clothes and accompanying accessories, as well as a kind of headboard to provide a measure of privacy and protection from drafts.
