Lit. "hidden from sight."
1 A structural member, part of which is not visible because it is inserted into another member. The visible part is called miegakari 見掛 (seen hanging).
2 One of many traditional garden techniques which emphasize only partial exposure of typical garden elements such as stone lanterns ishidōrō 石灯籠, waterfalls taki 滝, an arbor tei 亭, rocks, etc. These are generally half hidden by trees or bushes. The planning is arranged so that even people as they proceed along garden paths, are occasionally out of view. The hiding of various elements is intended to induce an illusion of distance.
