Ablutions performed to remove sin or illness. As a pictorial theme it is most closely associated with Section 65 of Ise monogatari 伊勢物語 (The Tales of Ise; see *ise monogatari-e 伊勢物語絵), which relates the story of a young man (Ariwara no Narihira 在原業平, 825-80) who prays to the gods to rid him of his lust for consort of the emperor. Famous examples include a hanging scroll by Ogata Kōrin 尾形光琳(1658-1716) in Hatakeyama Kinenkan 畠山記念館, Tokyo, which depicts the young man with a diviner holding a nusa 幣, a ritual staff (ritual paper-streamers).
