Also read mizukuri. A narrow opening cut out of the lower most beam of a balustrade *kōran 高欄. Since the beam rests on the veranda edge, the opening is necessary to allow rain reaching the veranda to run off. It also adds to the overall aesthetic quality of the balustrade.
