Lit. "water fortification." A dike constructed in the low-lying land between two mountains and filled with water to create a large moat to defend against an attacking enemy. The term appears in the Nihonshoki 日本書紀 (Chronicles of Japan, early 8th century) in reference to the mizuki constructed for the defense of Dazaifu 大宰府 in 664, Fukuoka Prefecture.
