Wood picture. Also called mokue 木絵. A technique of wood decoration, called hirazōgan 平象嵌 (flat inlay, see *zōgan 象嵌) in ancient times, and similar to mokuzōgan 木象嵌 (wood inlay) using ivory, horn or bamboo. There are several types of mokuga, mokuji 木地 (wood grain); kikakōseimon 幾何構成文 (geometrically constructed) using *ichimatsu 市松 (checkered patterns), yabanemon 矢羽根文 (arrow feather pattern) or yahazumon 矢筈文 (herringbone pattern); and kaiga 絵画 (pictorial) for representing birds and flowers.
