The date of production of a work of art. Nenki are often accompanied by the signature of the artist shomei 署名 or further inscriptions mei 銘. Most important evidence for dating and verifying the authenticity of artworks. The Chinese zodiac symbols *jikkan jūnishi 十干十二支 in a cycle of sixty years are sometimes used to indicate the year in the date, instead of an era name and year number.
