General Terms
A mud fence (a type of earthen wall *dobei 土塀) constructed with alternating layers of rectangular tiles and clay. It is used as exterior wall, sotobei 外塀, to enclose the gardens *roji 露地 of a tea house *chashitsu 茶室. It was also used to surround aristocratic dwellings and temples in the Edo period.
