nezumikido 鼠木戸

1　The audience's entrance at a theater or place of entertainment during the Muromachi period. Even when the area allotted to the audience was unroofed, it was enclosed by pales or stakes or an ordinary boarded fence. One type of entrance had a high threshold that was positioned under a lookout tower and a straw mat was hung in the opening. During the 1670's the entrance was given a latticed door called kido gōshi 木戸格子; during the 1860's in Edo, *kabuki 歌舞伎 theaters installed half-latticed sliding doors, each in a different style. In the second quarter of the 18th century, an east and west entrance was made and a curtain embellished with the theater's crest was hung inside each.

2　A small door set into a large wooden door, gate door or into some fences. Also nezumido 鼠戸, or *kugurido 潜り戸.

3　A lattice door made of small timber crosspieces, san 桟, hung at the kitchen entrance in a vernacular house *minka 民家 to prevent the intrusion of rats.
