A castle compound to the west of the main compound *honmaru 本丸. In a early-modern castle complex, the main compound, the second compound *ni-no-maru 二の丸 and third compound san-no-maru 三の丸 were aligned either concentrically or on an axis. When another important compound was placed to the west of the main compound, it was called the nishi-no-maru (the western compound).
