Shogun Ashikaga's 足利 book of tea ceremony implement arrangement, thought to have been written by Sōami 相阿弥 (1455-1525), a chamberlain who served Ashikaga Yoshimasa 足利義政 (1436-90). It is a companion book to *Kundaikan sōchōki 君台観左右帳記 and might be thought of as a manual of tea ceremony for the shogun. In the Okazarisho, the various ways to display and care for tea ceremony implements as carried out at Ogawadono 小川殿 and Higashiyamadono 東山殿 are described. The materialization of this book is clear from Sōami's own words and postscript, Kangaku shinsō 鑑岳真相, that he authored in 1523 which however is thought to be a fake. It is not known when this book was produced nor what the original one was like. However, it seems that Zashiki kazarisho 座敷飾書 of Higashiyamadono, which could be the source of this book, was written during Tenbun 天文 era (1532-55), when writing tea ceremony books flourished. It was circulated as Sōami's Okazarisho in the early Momoyama to early Edo periods between 1596 and 1644, the time when the lords' tea ceremony was popular and the *shoin 書院 style tea ceremony was revived. At this time, supplementing, omitting and erroneous copying occurred. Its relation to Kundaikan sōchōki during 1532-55 may have been the basis of a later book which appeared around the Keichō 慶長 era (1596-1615) as a palace tea ceremony book of Higashiyamadono and was highly valued. In 1660 one of its copies was thought to have been forged. This is a one volume book consisting of 93 items. The intention to publish is added on the first page of the book. Furthermore in the same year, the Ganka meibutsuki 玩貨名物記 added some amusing anecdotes. Both the Okazarisho and the Kundaikan sōchōki were provided as reference books for tea ceremony officials who were in charge of shoin decoration, shoinkazari 書院飾り. Changes were added to the instructions and various copies came into being.
