Gates
A generic term for the main gates of an aristocratic dwelling. It applies especially to residences in the shinden style *shinden-zukuri 寝殿造, and shoin style *shoin-zukuri 書院造. Now refers to the front gate of any dwelling. Although the main gate is truly the front entrance, it may have various names. For example the main entrance to the Heian period palace was called *Suzakumon 朱雀門.
