Also pronounced ōdan, ōni. A deep yellow color, produced by dyeing yellow gardenia *kuchinashi 支子 with red safflower *beni 紅. Ōtan is the designated color for the robes of a crown prince, and is one of seven colors called kinjiki 禁色 (forbidden colours), traditionally reserved for the imperial family and nobility.
