Also called raigōheki. A clay or wooden wall erected behind a Buddhist altar *shumidan 須弥壇 between the two rear pillars *raigōbashira 来迎柱. The theme of the painting on this wall depicts the descent of the *Amida 阿弥陀 who welcomes and carries the soul of the newly deceased to the Western Paradise saihō 西方. Example: the raigō-kabe behind the Amida statue in the central hall *Chūdō 中堂 of the Byōdōin *Hōōdō 平等院鳳凰堂.
