rinnōza 輪王坐

The royal ease position (Sk: Maharajalilasana). A seated position used for a Buddhist image with one knee (usually the right) raised and the other folded in front of the body. This relaxed position has a worldly character and is not as formal as most other seated positions of Buddhist deities *Nyoirin Kannon 如意輪観音 is usually seated in this position on a lotus base. A small bronze image in Yamato Bunkakan 大和文華館, Nara, is an excellent early 9th-century Chinese example. The most famous image in the rinnōza position is the 9th-century Nyoirin Kannon image from Kanshinji 観心寺 in Osaka.
