Lit. "flowing water style of pond and stream."
A type of water feature in a garden that includes a curving water course. The word nagare 流, the alternate reading of 流 ryū (flow), is often used to describe the serpentine streams in Japanese gardens of all periods and styles. For instance, the 11th-century garden manual *Sakuteiki 作庭記, described the curving stream in shinden style gardens *shinden-zukuri teien 寝殿造庭園, as resembling the track left by a crawling serpent.
