The application of color to various architectural elements. In the case of paintings, this normally involves the use of animal glue *nikawa 膠 or water colors suisai 水彩. Techniques include flat wash *hiranuri 平塗, line and color-wash *horinuri 掘塗, overall coloring koroshinuri 殺塗 and shading *kumadori 隈取. In architecture, coloring agents such as pigments *ganryō 顔料 and dyes senryō 染料 are used. Inorganic colorants *muki ganryō 無機顔料 based on metal oxides are often used on buildings.
