Sanage 猿投 kilns. A group of old kilns in an area stretching from the western area of modern Nagoya 名古屋 city to the northern mountains of Sanage discovered after the World War II. Many kinds of ancient wares were found from Sanage kilns, including sueki 須恵器 pots from the end of the Kofun period, kaiyū tōki 灰釉陶器 (gray glazed pottery) from the Nara to mid the Heian periods, ryokuyū tōki 緑釉陶器 (green glazed pottery) of Heian period, and teabowls from the Kamakura period. The Sanage kilns were probably influenced by Yuezhouyao (Jp: Esshūyō 越州窯) and celadon porcelain of the Tang and Five Dynasty periods in China. The Sanage kilns declined in the 12th century, but developed into *tokonameyaki 常滑焼, *setoyaki 瀬戸焼 and Atsumi 渥美 ware. Old Sanage wares are found widely in the Tōhoku 東北 and Chūgoku 中国 regions, and are especially plentiful in the cities of Nara and Kyoto.
