Also read Samaya-e. The second of the nine *mandara 曼荼羅 comprising the *Kue mandara 九会曼荼羅, where it is positioned below the central Jōshin-e 成身会. It corresponds to the Kongō himitsu mandara 金剛秘密曼荼羅 (Adamantine Secret Mandara), the second of the six mandara described in Chap. 1 of the Kongōchōkyō 金剛頂経 (Diamond Peak Sutra, Sk: Sarva tathagata tattva samgraha; Taishō Nos. 865, 882), on which the *Kongōkai mandara 金剛界曼荼羅 is based. Its name derives from the fact that the deities are all represented by means of symbolic objects sanmayagyō 三昧耶形, with, for example, the central deity *Dainichi 大日 being represented by a stupa *tō 塔, Kongō satta 金剛薩た by a five-pronged vajra *gokosho 五鈷杵, and Kongōhō 金剛法 (Sk: Vajradharma) by a lotus on top of a single-pronged vajra *tokkosho 独鈷杵. It is known that *Kūkai 空海 (774-835) brought back with him a copy of a Kongokai sanmaya mandara 金剛界三昧耶曼荼羅 executed in line drawing *hakubyō 白描 on white felt-like cloth, but because the Kue mandara became the most widely used form of the Kongōkai mandara, there are virtually no examples of independent versions of the Sanmaya-e.
