Lit. "bamboo grass fence." A living fence or hedge made of low-growing, bamboo grass called kumazasa 熊笹, and various other types of bamboo-grasses. Sometimes tree branches are bent and used as palings. A bent-branch fence is called edaorigaki or shiorigaki 枝折垣. Bamboo was also planted along the palings of this type of fence. Another example is the bamboo grass hedge made of the woven trunk ends of black bamboo hachiku 淡竹 in the eastern part of Katsura Rikyū 桂離宮, Kyoto. One record, dated 1714, states that bamboo-grass grew along the Katsura 桂 River.
