Lit. "pointing to the alcove." Ceiling battens *saobuchi 竿縁 or thick straw floor mats *tatami 畳 with the short end placed at right angles to an alcove *tokonoma 床の間. Two examples of ceiling battens at right angles to an alcove exist at: Daigoji Sanbōin Shoin 醍醐寺三宝院書院 (1600) and Kanchi'in Kyakuden 観智院客殿 (1606), both in Kyoto.
