Also ōidō 覆堂, ōiya 覆屋 or tōdō 套堂. Lit. "sheath hall." A building constructed over a shrine or temple building to provide protection from the elements. One example is the 5 × 5 bay structure built during the Muromachi period over the *Konjikidō 金色堂 at Chūsonji 中尊寺 (1124) in Iwate Prefecture. The structure is built on a stone foundation which raises the building to allow air to circulate beneath. The structure has 3-on-1 bracket complexes *mitesaki tokyō 三手先斗きょう, bearing block capped struts *kentozuka 間斗束, in the spaces between bracket complexes, and a copper-plated pyramidal roof *hōgyō yane 宝形屋根. It has only front and rear entrances four steps high and has no windows. The original Sayadō was removed and a new modern metal structure was erected over the Konjikidō after its complete dismantling, repair and restoration during the late 1960s-1970s.
