Also written 丈, 背. Lit. "depth or thickness." The distance between the underside and topside of timber, stones and gardens, or of finished parts. For example, sei refers to the measurement from the bottom to top of a large bearing block *daito 大斗 or the thickness of a horizontal beam *gagyō 丸桁, as opposed to its width haba 幅 or nagasa 長さ. However, the term takasa 高さ is used for the height of a pillar; sagari 下り is the correct term for the depth of a bargeboard pendant *gegyo 懸魚 or a hanging member; and atsusa 厚さ is the thickness of a board *ita 板. Seichigai 成違 means the difference in level between two related members.
