A pictorial subject based on "Sekiya" ("The Gatehouse"), Chapter 16 of Genji monogatari 源氏物語 (The Tale of Genji). In autumn, at the end of the Ninth Month, Genji sets out on a pilgrimage to Ishiyama 石山. On the way, at the south-east barrier-gatehouse of Ōsaka 逢坂 (slope of meeting), near Lake Biwa 琵琶, his party encounters that of *Utsusemi 空蝉 and her husband the Governor, returning from his post at Hitachi 常陸 (modern Ibaraki Prefecture). An illustration of this scene, when the governor's party, including ox-carriages, makes way for Genji's splendid mounted entourage, survives in the early 12th-century scroll of The Tale of Genji, Genji monogatari emaki 源氏物語絵巻 in the Tokugawa 徳川 Art Museum. Another well-known example is the screen by Tawaraya Sōtatsu 俵屋宗達 (?-ca 1640) in the Seikadō Bunko 静嘉堂文庫, Tokyo.
