sensui 泉水

Lit. "spring water." Originally the term referred to spring water running through a garden. In Kyoto, a number of residential gardens feature small spring-fed rivulets that created a cooling effect in summer. In the Meiji period, Tokyo residents used the term sensui to refer to all types of gardens.
