Also shakujōbori 釈杖彫, yuengata 油煙形. A type of decorative carving *horimono 彫物, found on temple architecture. It consists of a shallow channel or groove cut on the underside of a rainbow beam *kōryō 虹梁, and is thought to resemble the staff of a mendicant monk. The decoration first appeared in the Kamakura period, and gradually became more stylized.
