shiage 仕上

The texture or color of the finish applied to the surface of any visible structural member in the interior of a building. This includes fixed or movable elements. Shiage is used to refer, for example to the smoothness of a lacquered frame around the panels of opaque sliding doors *fusuma 襖; the texture on a pillar, Nikkō Tōshōgū *Yōmeimon 日光東照宮陽明門 (1637) in Tochigi Prefecture for example, covered with a plastered motif; the red-orange color applied to many shrine buildings, Heian Jingū 平安神宮 (rebuilt 1895) in Kyoto for example. The term shiage sunpō 仕上寸法, refers to the overall dimensions of an object or part of a structure after it has been cut to shape, planed and if required, covered with a finish coat of paint or lacquer.
