Lumber cut from sapwood, the living part of a tree trunk, or cut from sizable limbs attached to the dead heartwood. Timber cut from heartwood is far more apt to crack easily and therefore is not used often for structural members. A variety of different grained wood can be cut from sapwood: fine to coarse grains *mokume 木目 (*itame 板目) and straight, regular grain *masame 柾目 used for boards or planks; and very fine, straight grains called *itomasa 糸柾.
