1 Also shusha 朱砂, tansha 丹砂, tanshu 丹朱. Cinnabar, mercuric sulphide HgS. A naturally occurring hexagonal crystal that is dark red with a glossy shine. Used to make the red pigment vermilion *shu 朱, used in Eastern painting tōyōga 東洋画, for vermilion lacquer shu-urushi 朱漆, and to make seal paste indei 印泥.

2 A Japanese term for a type of red glaze used on Chinese ceramics, or ceramic ware decorated with red glaze or designs in red. Also shinshayū 辰砂釉.
