Also kijizō 素地像. A wooden statue with a natural wood surface. Shirakizō may be a Buddhist or Shinto image. It is finished without paint or lacquer, except for some color used on the facial features. A natural wood surface is often found on sandalwood statues *danzō 檀像 and *natabori 鉈彫 (statues with unsmoothed chisel marks).
