Also called sedo 背戸. Backdoor, rear door of a building or a stable.
Also written 尻戸. The doors that constitute the rear entry to individual horse stalls, tachiba 立場 in the stables *umaya 馬屋 of the warrior class, buke 武家, and shrines *jinja 神社. The term sometimes refers to the entry itself.
The usual arrangement was a pair of plain timber swing doors *itatobira 板扉, attached to each stall, opening outwards and locked with a horizontal timber bar. More lavish examples, literally called the god's stable *Shinkyū 神厩 at Nikkō Tōshōgū 日光東照宮 in Tochigi Prefecture, have a pair of panelled doors *sangarado 桟唐戸 with socket hinges, hijitsubo kanamono 肘壷金物. Each leaf has decorative openwork *sukashibori 透彫, panels with *hanazama 花狭間 motif.
