shitakirihime 舌切姫

Lit. "girl sticking out her tongue." A mask used in kyōgen 狂言 plays and representing a young woman with her tongue sticking out. This mask is a variation of the young woman mask *oto 乙, and has a similarly wide forehead, bulging round cheeks, small mouth and upturned nose. Her hair is painted in disordered strands, and her expression is cheeky, carefree and innocent. Like oto, shitakirihime can be used to represent the ugly face of a girl fished up as a potential wife in Tsuribari 釣針 (The Capricious Magic Fish Hook).
