Lit. "gem or precious stone base." The most common base for an image of *Fudō Myōō 不動明王. A type of rock base *iwaza 岩座, it generally consists of polygon-shaped cubes piled up on top of one another with the center as the most narrow section. Although around five to seven cubes are common, the number of the layers is not consistent. The sides of the piled-up sections are usually painted with graded colors in the *ungen 繧繝 manner.
The sculpture of Fudō at Tōji 東寺 in Kyoto sits on a large wooden shitsushitsuza, and a similar type is often represented in painted images of Fudō. Examples are found in the earliest esoteric paintings of Fudō, such as the 9th-century Takao mandara 高尾曼荼羅 at Jingoji 神護寺 in Kyoto and the Sai-in ryōkai mandara 西院両界曼荼羅 at Tōji, also from the 9th century.
