A special mat for one or more guests, shōban 相伴, who are companions to the guest of honor, shōkyaku 正客. When the guest of honor is seated in front of the alcove *tokonoma 床の間, the shōbanseki is placed adjacent. Where no shōbanseki is provided, the shōban must sit either on a regular guest mat or on the step-in mat.
