The term combines the two words *shōhekiga 障壁画 (paintings on sliding doors, free-standing screens) and *byōbu-e 屏風絵 (paintings on folding screens). Paintings on large architectural surfaces gained popularity in the 15th-16th century and flourished during the 16th-17th century. Many examples dating after the 16th century remain.
