sō 層

One story of a building or a counter for the number of roofs on a pagoda *tō 塔. A multi-storied structure is called jūsō 重層, while a single-storied structure is called tansō 単層. *Jū 重 is also a synonym for sō and is a more common usage today in traditional architecture. For example, a 5-storied pagoda is generally called *gojū-no-tō 五重の塔.
