Also termed sōgawa 総河, sometimes written 総側 or 総川, sōguruwa 総郭, 総曲輪. The enclosure that surrounds a town below a castle *jōkamachi 城下町. This includes the earthen embankment, the stone wall, and the moat. When a castle has more than one surrounding enclosure, sōgamae refers to the outermost one.
