Also called soriwatarō 反渡廊, taikobashienrōka 太鼓橋縁廊下. Roofed, open-sided corridors with a convex curved or arched bridge in the center. It was an integral part of the landscape of aristocratic residences *shinden-zukuri 寝殿造 of the Heian period. The corridor connected the central building shinden 寝殿, with the tai-no-ya 対屋, separate living areas to the east and west. No extant shinden style complex remains today. Examples that retain something of the style are found in the Zen temples Kohōan 孤蓬庵, Daisen-in 大仙院, at Daitokuji 大徳寺, Kyoto.
