1 A shading *kumadori 隈取 technique where ink or color are applied just outside of the outlines of the object to give a three-dimensional effect.

2 In Buddhist art, sotoguma refers to shading added as a background, making an object appear to float in space. In the case of an all-white subject, such as a white-robed Kannon *Byakue Kannon 白衣観音 or a white crane, and also in some cases of subjects painted with bright pigments, the background area is shaded with ink to emphasize the subject.
