suijaku 垂迹

Lit. "trace manifestation." The equivalent for *kami 神 (god), in the pairing of Buddhist and Shinto deities called *honji suijaku 本地垂迹. Thus suijaku is the very concept that Japanese Shinto deities are manifestations of the Buddhist ones, of which the latter are therefore the actual deities.
