Also called sumidaruki 隅垂木 and ōdaruki大垂木. A hip rafter or corner rafter that forms a diagonal ridge which slopes downward from the main ridge *munagi 棟木 to the corner posts *sumibashira 隅柱 of a building. Hip rafters form the main frame of a hipped roof *yosemune yane 寄棟屋根, and established the eave curvature. If the roof is a hip-and-gable type *irimoya yane 入母屋根, the hip rafters run from the gable ends to the corner pillars. Hip rafters are larger in cross section than ordinary rafters *taruki 垂木, and are usually set at a 45 degree angle. Hip rafters receive the inner ends of rafters and the ends of purlins *keta 桁. The flying rafter support *kioi 木負 and eave support *kayaoi 茅負, are also attached to the hip rafters. They give definition to the characteristic curvilinear line of the eaves.
