Lit. "omitting a printing." An *ukiyo-e 浮世絵 woodblock printmaking technique where a single woodblock is carved to print, at separate times, in two or more colors. This, in effect, saves blocks, because the general rule for color woodblock printing is to carve a separate woodblock to print each color in the design. Surinuki is used in cases where only small, localized areas of certain colors are required. Areas on the printing block which will print different colors must be sufficiently far apart to prevent inadvertent inking of more than the required portion.
