A sacrificial compound constructed in front of a main compound. A camp used to launch an attacking force. When a force moves to defensive attitude, the camp is abandoned. The camp does not have a high earthen embankment, walls or towers on the side of the camp that forces the main compound in order to allow an unimpeded shooting of arrows and muskets from the main compound. In an early modern castle, the tertiary ward san-no-maru 三の丸, may have been a precursor to the sacrificial compound.
