Paper-covered bamboo frames used as full-sized sliding doors *shōji 障子, or the small doors found on the side of an alcove *tokonoma 床の間. Split bamboo is arranged so that horizontal muntins have their outer surface facing up. Vertical muntins are usually set so that their outer surfaces face forward, although there are other arrangements. The muntins are then covered with paper, as on a regular shōji. In some cases, some of the bamboo are left uncovered for a decorative effect, and the nodes in the bamboo are also preserved as a decorative feature. Often used in tea rooms.
