A pictorial subject taken from "Tamakazura" ("The Jeweled Chaplet"), Chapter 22 of Genji monogatari 源氏物語 (The Tale of Genji). This chapter centers around Tamakazura, an illegitimate child of Tō no Chūjō 頭中将, Genji's friend and rival, and the Lady of the Evening Faces *Yūgao 夕顔. She has been raised by her wet nurse in Kyūshū 九州 and has turned into a beautiful young lady. A local warrior presses his affections on her, and she and her wet nurse's family flee by sea toward the capital. Praying for better fortune at Hasedera 長谷寺, Nara, they happen to meet Ukon 右近, who had formerly served the Lady of the Evening Faces and is now in Genji's employ. Through her, Genji learns of the girl's whereabouts, and he has her brought and installed at his Rokujō 六条 mansion (see *Otome 乙女).

Scenes frequently selected for illustration include: Tamakazura traveling by boat; Genji interviewing Tamakazura in the house of the Lady of the Orange Blossoms (see *Hanachirusato 花散里) on an evening of the Tenth Month; and Genji and Murasaki no Ue 紫の上, his principal wife, surrounded by clothes boxes, deciding which robes to send to which of his ladies at the beginning of winter.
